Collaborative Resources for Computation and VisualizationMolecular modeling, visualization, and analysis play important roles both in the pharmaceutical sciences and in the regional university research community.Recognizing the need to update facilites and software holdings, a joint proposal was submitted to the Major Shared Equipment Program of the NIH/NCRR by investigators in the Depts. of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biological Sciences, and the UB computational support group, Science and Engineering Node Services (SENS). The proposal was funded in 2002, and out of this grant, the LMVA (Laboratory for Molcular Visualization) was created. The original purpose of the lab was to support 3 main software packages for gene analysis and molecular analysis and visualization: GCG, Insight/Discover, and Sybyl. The grant provided several clusters of high-performance workstations on the two UB campuses, as well as high-performance servers and data storage. Software holdings have grown with the addition of licences for gene array analysis and protomics analysis. The facility continues to support a large number of researchers in the Western New York region, and at least two academic courses use the facility for training at the graduate level. The laboratory is self-sustaining in terms of continuing software license fees. Because of the number large number of subscribers, the LMVA is able to provide access to its software library at a nominal annual charge. Information about the LMVA hardware, location of facilities, subscription information, and software holdings can be found by following this link:
