Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences
Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (LCMS) Facility at UB

Mission and Purpose of the Facility

The array of liquid chromatography/mass spectrometer (LC/MS) systems in the facility supports a wide range of basic and applied pharmaceutical research. In support of pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics, the facility has the expertise and resources to quantify drugs and other molecules of interest at high sensitivity, and detect, characterize, and quantify drug metabolites in biological fluids or tissues. Our capabilities have expanded in the area of proteomics, both to quantify specific proteins and peptides in biological matrices and to obtain peptide sequence information at high-throughput.

The instruments in this facility are operated as shared resources. Consistent with the guidelines of the Major Shared Equipment Program of the NIH/NCRR, which provided funds for three of our mass spectrometer/liquid chromatography systems, our primary mission is to support the research of NIH-funded investigators.

Our secondary mission, also a consistent with the mandate of the NIH/NCRR grant program, is to bring new users into the facility, and assist them in applying these state-of-the-art techniques to their research. Therefore, the instruments are available, as time permits, to a wide range of researchers in the UB and Western New York research community.

The facility also supports small businesses and regional industry as time, personnel and instrument availability permit. This service is in keeping with the mandate of non-federal sources that have also provided equipment to this facility. The first priority tier includes projects funded by federal SBIR/STTR grants to small business. Projects must be consistent with the scientific mission of the center, and those chosen generally advance the state-of-the-art in pharmaceutical or protein analysis.
